MANILA – The Duterte administration is coming up with a P10-billion multiagency rehabilitation program for the besieged city of Marawi.
For six months, the fund will support reconstruction activities in the city attacked by the Islamic State-inspired Maute group.
An executive order for “Bangon Marawi” is being refined at the Office of the Executive Secretary before its submission to President Rodrigo Duterte, said Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella.
He said the “recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation” program may begin in “one or two weeks” after Marawi is cleared of the radical Islamists.
Some 240,000 people were displaced by the firefight between government troops and the Maute group as of June 6, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Crisis Management Committee reported.
The death toll in the armed conflict currently stands at around 200.
“We assure you that the President is deeply concerned for the city, the region and the island’s well-being,” said Abella.
Duterte is “very hands-on” in ensuring the restoration of peace and normalcy in Marawi “at the soonest possible time,” he said.
The Department of National Defense is tasked to carry out Bangon Marawi in consultation with the departments of Trade and Industry, Education, Social Welfare and Development, Energy, and Information and Communications Technology, as well as the Disaster Risk Reduction Cluster./PN
