MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers rallied from a set down to score a 15-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 victory over Petron Blaze Spikers in the 2017 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference at the San Juan Arena.
Guimaras native Jovelyn Gonzaga led the way with 16 points for HD Spikers, which boosted its chances in the next round after moving to the solo first place in Group A with a 2-0 win-loss slate after the Saturday night match.
Honey Royce Tubino added 13 markers, while Maica Morada and Cherry Vivas contributed 9 points apiece for HD Spikers, which aims to sweep its group matches when it faces F2 Logistics Cargo Movers on Tuesday.
“Madali na lang iyong adjustment. Kailangan lang ma-dominate natin iyong kalaban kasi malalaki iyong gitna nila kaya iyong blockings, kailangan iyong paandar sa kanila,” said HD Spikers head coach George Pascua.
After losing the opening set, HD Spikers engaged into tight battle with Blaze Spikers in the second set until the former surged to a 24-20 lead behind Gonzaga and Tubino. Blaze Spikers came to within 24-22 but an error handed the set to HD Spikers.
Both teams figured in another tight game in the third before HD Spikers pulled away to a 22-17 lead behind Tubino, Morada and Vivas. Blaze Spikers tried to keep it close but a conversion by Relea Saet ended the set.
HD Spikers recovered from a slow start in the fourth set to seize the lead at 15-13 on a Tubino hit. The squad later widened the gap to 22-14 on hits by Vivas, Tubino and Gonzaga — and never looked back.
Meanwhile Foton Tornadoes cruised to its second straight win as it defeated Generika-Ayala Life Savers, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15. Jaja Santiago dropped 35 points to lead the way for Tornadoes./PN
