BACOLOD City – The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) is not against the proposal of the city slaughterhouse operator to activate a chicken line.
AVM Bernardo urged the city government to require the dressing of poultry products at the slaughterhouse in Barangay Handumanan by fully enforcing City Ordinance No. 459 series of 2008.
Requiring the dressing of all poultry products at the slaughterhouse will activate the facility’s chicken line, AVM Bernardo plant manager Glorydee Cometa wrote Mayor Evelio Leonardia on June 14.
“We are not opposing this,” Naida Bolvar, OIC regional technical director of the NMIS Negros Island Region, said at the Sangguniang Panlungsod markets and slaughterhouse committee hearing on Thursday.
“Bacolod City and AVM Bernardo has a contract. They should comply with it. Otherwise, they will be liable for breach of contract,” she added.
The chicken line has been inactive since the slaughterhouse started operating in 2008.
At the time, Cometa said, the city government granted the request of marginal poultry raisers for a moratorium on the chicken line operation.
The NMIS is all for it as long as the slaughterhouse complies with all requirements in putting up a poultry dressing plant, Bolvar said.
For instance, the facility’s entrance must be separate from its exit to avoid “cross contamination,” she said.
Without an active “chicken line” at the slaughterhouse, the city government is losing income, Cometa earlier said.
She said the non-operation of the chicken line “substantially reduced the revenue of the slaughterhouse [by] P600,000 every month.”
This does not include the “resultant loss of revenue by the city in the form of regulation fee on the dressed poultry products,” she claimed./PN
