DETAINED senator Leila de Lima criticized President Rodrigo Duterte for what she claimed to be “broken promises” made during the latter’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) last year.
Duterte is delivering his second SONA today.
The President’s self-imposed deadline to end the illegal drug trade within three to six months already lapsed but the drug problem remains, de Lima said.
“Ano naman kaya ang pwede niyang ipagmalaki sa SONA? Mga patayan? Mga kasinungalingan?” she said in an interview after a hearing in Quezon City.
“Iyong drug trade bumalik na nga sa (New) Bilibid (Prison) kasi hinayaan nilang mamayagpag iyong mga drug convicts na iyan in exchange doon sa pag-testify nila (laban) sa akin,” the senator added.
Many of Duterte’s promises – elimination of contractualization, salary raise for uniformed officers and lowering of the prices of commodities, among others – have yet to be fulfilled, said de Lima.
“So, ano ho ang ipagmamalaki nila sa SONA?” said the President’s staunch critic.
Earlier de Lima called Duterte’s first year in office as “a year of lies, pressure, rudeness, and failed promises,” as proven by her detention for alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade at the national penitentiary.
De Lima had been at odds with Duterte even when the latter was still Davao City mayor and the former was Commission on Human Rights head. At the time, the commission investigated Duterte for his supposed link to a death squad./PN
