BACOLOD City – Councilor Bartolome Orola asked the Philippine Red Cross to lower the blood processing fee for indigent patients if they issue a valid card.
The councilor authored a resolution making this request to Red Cross president Richard Gordon. It was approved by the city council last week.
He said making indigent patients pay for a high processing fee is “unacceptable.”
“Families of indigent patients come to my office requesting for financial assistance. They cannot afford to pay such a [high] rate every time they request for blood,” Orola said.
Orola cited Republic Act 10072, or an Act Recognizing the Philippine National Red Cross as an Independent, Autonomous, Nongovernmental Organization Auxiliary to the Authorities of the Republic of the Philippines in the Humanitarian Field, to be Known as the Philippine Red Cross.
He said Red Cross must “cooperate with public authorities in the prevention of disease, the promotion of health and the mitigation of human suffering.”
The Red Cross National Blood Services is one of the major suppliers of blood in the country./PN
