MANILA – A party-list representative wants the martial in Mindanao to be expanded to the entire country.
Shernee Abubakar Tan of Kusug-Tausug cited “threats” in Luzon and Visayas.
“Maybe after the (State of the Nation Address), I will consult with other lawmakers that we file a resolution expanding the coverage of martial law throughout the country,” Tan said.
The representative already pitched the idea when she explained her affirmative vote to President Rodrigo Duterte’s proposal to extend the martial law in Mindanao until the end of the year.
During a joint session on Saturday, Congress voted to extend the military rule in the southern major region, with 261 lawmakers approving and 18 dissenting.
Tan said the presence of rebel groups, like the New People’s Army, in Luzon and Visayas is enough reason for a countrywide martial law.
“After kong nagsalita, pagbalik ko sa upuan ko, ang mga katabi ko naman galing din sa ibang probinsya, mga galing din sa Luzon at sa Visayas na mga kongresista, nagustuhan naman nila ang sinabi ko,” she said.
Amid the clashes between the military and the Maute terrorist group in Marawi City, Duterte placed the entire Mindanao under martial law on May 23.
