ILOILO City – Aiming to bolster the city as the “next Silicon Valley” and set the foundation to become among the most competitive Information Technology (IT) / Financial hubs in Asia, the Iloilo City government will be launching “Ilovation” before the end of the year.
The portmanteau of Iloilo and innovation, Ilovation 2017 is an upcoming two-day activity that seeks to bring together Ilonggo tech experts, web developers, animators, robotics experts, and those involved in startup ventures to build a community of innovators.
“Ilovation 2017 was crafted by Mayor [Jed Patrick] Mabilog because during the visit of Chinese investors here, it was pronounced that Iloilo City [could have to potential to be the] next Silicon Valley and IT Financial Hub. We have to promote our local talents to become globally-competitive,” said city Local Economic and Investment Promotion Officer (LEIPO) head Ritchel Gavan, during a “Community Huddle” of different sectors and stakeholders on July 24.
Gavan shares that Iloilo City is ripe to become a leader in the IT industry, with around 22,132 students currently enrolled in IT and related courses. In 2016 alone, Iloilo produced 3,592 graduates in the said courses. The large labor force potential of these students and graduates could greatly benefit the city’s burgeoning growth, Gavan added.
“By the end of the year, the city plans to launch ‘Ilovatio’ – standing for Iloilo and innovation,” explained Gavan. “We will have the Iloilo Tech expo 2017 where we will gather local IT experts, web developers, and those engaged in tech innovations and techpreneurs. Senior high school students, as well as college students enrolled in IT and related courses, will also be gathered at this event.”
Representatives from big technology companies and corporations will be present during “Ilovation” to serve as resource speakers, she added.
“Ilovation and the Iloilo Tech expo will be a venue for us to showcase what we have, at the same time inspire students,” she added. “The main goal of this event is to introduce Iloilo City, with its pool of experts, to the biggest tech companies in the Philippines and Asia.”
“Ambitious?” Gavan asked the “Community Huddle” crowd on Monday.
“Everything starts with a dream and if you’re supposed to dream, you have to dream big, right?” she concluded./PN
