MANILA – Three Ilonggo and four Negrense athletes are competing in athletics at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this month.
The following Ilonggo athletes will represent the Philippines in the biennial event: Edgardo Alejan Jr. of Pototan, Evalyn Palabrica of Banate and Manuel Lasangue Jr. of Tigbauan, all in Iloilo province.
Negrense Philippine delegates, on the other hand, are Arniel Ferrera and Rosie Villarito of Cauayan, Negros Occidental, and Jeson Oyco Agravante of Bacolod City, and Marestella Torres-Sunang of San Jose, Negros Oriental.
Alejan will try to bag the gold medal in 400m dash and 4x400m relay. Palabrica will compete in javelin throw while Lasangue will try his luck in high jump.
Meanwhile, Ferrera is competing in hammer throw, Villarito in javelin throw, Agravante in marathon, and Torres-Sunang in long jump.
Other Filipinos in the athletics are Anfernee Lopena (100m / 4X400m relay), Aries Toledo (4X400 relay), Archand Christian Dimaan Bagsit (200m, 4x100m / 4×400 relay), Immuel Candole Camino (3,000m steeplechase), Christopher Ulboc Jr. (3,000m steeplechase);
Clinton Kingsley Bautista (110m hurdle), Eric Shaun Cray (100m / 400m hurdle / Elbren Neri (1,500m), Ernest John Obiena (pole vault), Janry Ubas (long jump), Kenny Gonzales (javelin throw);
Marco Vilog (800m), Mark Harry Diones (triple jump, 4x100m relay),Francis Tiaga Medina (400m hurdle), Melvin Calano (javelin throw), Mervin Guarte (800m / 1,500m);
Michael Carlo del Prado (4×400 m relay), Patrick Ma. Unso (110m hurdle / 4×400 m relay), Ronne Malipay (triple jump), Tyler Christian (long jump), and Trenten Anthony Beram (200m / 400m / 4x100m relay / 4x400m relay).
The women’s team includes Emily Jean Obiena (pole vault), Katherine Kay Santos (4x100m relay / 4x400m relay / long jump), Riezel Buenaventura (pole vault), Rosie Reah Joy Reyes Tabal (marathon), and Zion Rose Nelson (100m / 200m / 400m / 4x100m relay / 4x400m relay).
In the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore, the Philippine athletics team took home 21 medals – five gold, seven silver and nine bronze./PN
