MANILA – Rene Catalan cruised to a unanimous-decision victory over Bu Huo You Ga in ONE FC: Quest for Greatness at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The veteran Ilonggo fighter’s third consecutive win Friday night improved his record to 3-2-0 (win-loss-draw) while the Chinese boxer’s slate dropped to 4-3-0.
Bu tried to intimidate Catalan early in the opening round with unorthodox moves but the Filipino tumbled the former with a left-hand straight. Catalan tried to finish off his foe with ground and pound but Bu survived.
Bu bounced back in the second round and tried to decidedly clobber Catalan several times with a double-leg takedown but the 38-year-old Ilonggo broke away from the submission with elbows and leg kicks.
In the third round, Catalan took advantage of a tired Bu to land his leg kicks and punches. He also tried to take the Chinese fighter down but was unable to finish him off as the final buzzer sounded.
While Catalan was successful in his fight, younger brother Robin suffered a technical-knockout defeat to Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke.
After dominating Round 1, Robin suffered a meltdown in Round 2 and was finished off by the opponent with knee strikes in the last 46 seconds of the round.
In the other match, Filipino Kevin Belingon got away with a first-round technical-knockout win over Australian Reece McLaren, putting himself in a better position for title clash soon./PN
