MANILA – Blackwater Elite banked on hot shooting from Shej Roi Sumang to get away with a 107-106 victory against NLEX Road Warriors in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup.
Sumang, a former University of the East Red Warrior, unloaded career-high 32 points – 22 in the first half – to help Elite register its second straight victory in the conference and improve to a 2-3 win-loss record.
Import Henry Walker chipped in with 29 points while Michael Digregorio contributed 18 for Blackwater, which played Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum without stars Mark Belo and Arthur Dela Cruz.
“We’re just happy to see him (Sumang) get out of his shell and showcase the real talent he has,” said Blackwater head coach Leo Isaac. “But Henry again proved to be the inspiration for the team.”
After a slim 32-29 lead, Elite pulled away on consecutive triples by Sumang for 45-34. NLEX managed to come to within 48-50 but 7 straight points by Sumang allowed Blackwater to advance 59-56 by halftime.
Elite rallied for a 67-58 advantage early in the third frame on back-to-back triples by DiGregorio. NLEX answered with a run to tie the count 84-all before surging ahead 90-85 on midrange baskets by Rabeh Al-Hussaini.
It was a seesaw battle since then. Road Warriors went ahead 97-96 on a Cyrus Baguio basket before Sumang and Walker drained back-to-back treys to give Elite a 104-97 lead.
Road Warriors came to within 101-104 but Sumang drained another triple to extend the lead 107-101. NLEX scored back-to-back to come close 106-107 but failed to complete the comeback as Larry Fonacier misfired a score attempt.
Kevin Alas top-scored with 19 points while import Aaron Fuller and JR Quinahan added 13 points apiece for Road Warriors, which dropped to 5-2./PN
