ILONGGO persons with disabilities (PWDs) were participating in a sports fest from Aug. 21 to 25 at the La Paz plaza gym as part of Iloilo City’s Charter Day celebration.
Physical deficiencies are not a hindrance to getting into sports – this is the message that “Sports for PWDs” wants to convey, according to Rommel Castro, head of the Sports Development Division of the city government.
“The Iloilo City Sports Council would like to invite Ilonggos to join us in this historic moment as we open the Sports for PWDs as part our Charter Day celebration,” Castro told Panay News.
Among the events in “Sports for PWDs” are volleyball (hearing-impaired), chess (PWDs), goalball (visually impaired), and basketball (hearing-impaired and PWDs).
“This program will give fun and enjoyment to our PWD brothers and sisters who will be given the chance to show their sports skills,” he added. “As what Khang (Kijarro) Nguyen said, ‘Abled does not mean enabled. Disabled does not mean less abled.’”
Special education teachers suggested that this program be included among Charter Day activities, said Castro. “May kaisog, kina-adman kag ikasarang upod sa kasadyahan kag hinampang sang syudad.”
For more details, Ilonggo PWDs may contact the Sports Development Division at (033) 3331111 local 503 or 09177200630./PN
