MANILA – Iloilo City’s Cong. Jerry Treñas has ruled out the possibility of running alongside the Gonzalezes in the 2019 mid-term elections.

“I have already announced my retirement from politics,” he told Panay News.

Dr. Pacita Gonzalez, wife of the late Justice secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr., reportedly took oath as member of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

“I have already said that I will support him (Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog),” said Treñas.

Mabilog, now in this third and final consecutive term, is reportedly running for congressman although he is not a member of PDP-Laban line Treñas.

In December 2016 during his 60th birthday, the Ilonggo solon announced he was retiring from politics in 2019 when he would have completed his third and final consecutive term as congressman. He then endorsed Mabilog for congressman and Vice Mayor Jose Espinosa III as city mayor.

Treñas said he has not spoken to Gonzalez.

“She has not reached out to me,” he said.
The Gonzalezes, Treñas and Mabilog previously belonged to the Lakas-CMD political party of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. In the 2010 elections, however, Treñas (then a “graduating” city mayor) ran for congressman against reelectionist Cong. Raul Gonzalez Jr. and won while then vice mayor Mabilog defeated Raul Sr. for city mayor.

Treñas and Mabilog were then running under the Liberal Party (LP).
Weeks after President Rodrigo Duterte won the 2016 elections, Treñas left the LP and joined the President’s PDP-Laban. Mabilog stayed with the LP but just this June announced he was quitting his party to become an independent.

It was recently reported that Dr. Pacita Gonzalez had been appointed district chairman of PDP-Laban in Iloilo City. However, just this Sunday, Aug. 13, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, party leader, said he did not have any idea about Gonzalez.
“As far as I am concerned, ang PDP-Laban dito si (Cong.) Jerry Treñas,” Alvarez said.

In a radio interview last June, Gonzalez said she was not keen on running for an elective post. In 2016, her daughter Marigold ran for mayor under the United Nationalist Alliance but lost to Mabilog./PN
