ATENEO de Manila University Lady Eagles scored 25-23, 25-18, 25-19, 30-28, 19-25 to defeat Perlas-BanKo Lady Spikers in their exhibition match at the University of San Agustin gym in Iloilo City.
Bea de Leon, Jhoanna Maraguinot, Kat Tolentino, and Julia Samonte took the cudgels for the offense, while Negrense Kassandra Gequillana was impressive in her first game as libero for Ateneo on Sunday night.
The three-set sweep would have ended the match but an action-filled two-set extension was played following clamor from the fans.
“Ateneo and Perlas agreed to play two more sets,” organizer Ruding Villaruz said of the sporting event in line with the Iloilo City Charter Day celebration.
Trailing early in the opening set, Ateneo managed to mount a comeback for a 15-all deadlock. The game was a seesaw battle since then until Lady Eagles escaped with a set win on errors by Perlas.
Ateneo jumped to a 7-3 start in the second frame. Perlas managed to come to within 10-12 before Lady Eagles pulled away anew 18-12 on hits by Samonte. De Leon and Madeleine Madayag executed back-to-back hits to end the set in Ateneo’s favor.
Ateneo continued to dominate in the third set with an early 10-6 edge before Perlas managed to come close 9-11. Then it was all Lady Eagles, with Maraguinot, Deanna Wong and Bettina Abella scoring to take the set.
Perlas surged to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set but Ateneo quickly erased this for a 15-all count. Lady Eagles then built a 22-17 lead but Lady Spikers forced a deadlock several times. Hits by Maraguinot and Madayag handed the set to Ateneo.
The fifth set was a seesaw exchange before Perlas pulled away 16-11. The lead widened 19-13 before Ateneo rallied to come close 19-22. Late hits by Nicole Tiamzon and Amy Ahomiro allowed Perlas to win the set./PN
