MANILA – The Filipinas fought, and they fought hard. But their efforts were barely enough.
Vietnam defeated the Philippines 25-27, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 in the 29th Southeast Asian Games women’s volleyball yesterday at the MITEC Hall of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Tran Thi Thanh Tuy scored 26 – on 22 attacks, three blocks and a service ace – while Nguyen Thi Ngok Hoa added 20 to help Vietnam capture the bronze medal and kick the Philippines down to fourth place.
This was the second straight SEA Games edition that the Philippines failed to land a medal finish in women’s volleyball.
Vietnam took an early edge in the opening set but the Philippines kept in step and forced several deadlocks, the last one at 25-all. An error by Vietnam followed by a Valdez off-the-block hit gave the set to Philippines.
The Philippines started strong in Set 2 for an 8-4 lead but Vietnam slowly clawed its way back to come to within 21-22. Tran converted 4 straight points to snatch the set for Vietnam.
After a tight start in the third set, Vietnam pulled away on the Philippines’ errors 20-15. The Filipinas rallied to within 20-23 but back-to-back errors allowed Vietnam to take a 2-1 set lead.
Vietnam went on another strong start in Set 4 for an 11-6 edge before widening the gap further 19-11. The Philippines managed to come to within 19-22 but a couple of errors handed Vietnam the victory.
Jaja Santiago top-scored with 20 points, including 17 attacks, while Alyssa Valdez and Guimaras native Jovelyn Gonzaga had 17 and 13, respectively, for the Philippines./PN
