MANILA – Dines Dumaan overcame weight problems to bag a gold medal in pencak silat at the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The 21-year-old native of Panitan town in Capiz province was overweight by 2 kilos before his tanding Class A 45-50kg division campaign, pencak silat chief Princess Jacel Kiram said.
“Good thing he was able to run [the weight] off,” Kiram said. “He’s a very hardworking athlete with a lot of promise.”
“We discovered Dines from the National Games,” said Kiram. “He worked his way up the national pencak silat team after his impressive sparring with national team members.”
Dumaan said he took his training so seriously he decided to stop attending Colegio dela Purisima Consolacion in Roxas City.
“Sulit naman iyong pagtigil ko sa pag-aaral para mag-concentrate sa training ko,” he said.
“Last year po kasi bronze lang ako sa (Asian) Beach Games kaya nagpursige talaga ako sa training,” he added.
Dumaan’s gold medal feat on Tuesday was extra special – this was the Philippines’ first SEA Games gold in pencak silat since Earl Buenviaje won one during the 2005 edition held in the Philippines.
Pencak silat is an umbrella term for a class of related Indonesian martial arts but may also refer to a class of indigenous martial arts from a geo-cultural area of Southeast Asia.
It is a full-body fighting form incorporating strikes, grappling and throwing in addition to weaponry./PN
