SAN JOSE, Antique – Gov. Rhodora J. Cadiao gave P10,000 cash to a taekwondo jin who won a gold medal in a competition in Los Angeles, United States.
Jean Albert Tunguia was encouraged by his trainer to join the international event after failing to win a medal at the Palarong Pambansa in the province last April.
His experience at the Palaro challenged him to train harder – and this made him bag a gold medal at the International Taekwondo Festival in May – said Tunguia, a 13-year-old Grade 7 student at John B. Lacson Maritime University in Iloilo City.
“The cash award is the provincial government’s way of showing support to [Antiqueño] athletes,” Cadiao said.
The governor established a sports academy for students excelling in sports.
The provincial government also invited a water polo Olympian to train young swimmers.
The Barcelona-born Albert Español, who was on vacation in the Philippines, conducted last month a free clinic among Antiqueño swimmers at the Binirayan Sports Complex in this capital town.
Español is with Spain’s national team in the last 10 years and has competed in the Olympic Games in London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He won silver in the World Championship in Rome in 2009. (PNA)
