ROXAS City – Secondary schools in Capiz were preparing for random drug testing among their students, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).
An orientation among school heads and parents, through the Parents-Teachers Associations, had been lined up, said Capiz Schools Division Superintendent Miguel Mac Aposin.
Earlier, a team from DepEd-Capiz was sent to Cebu for an orientation on the process of conducting the drug test, he said.
DepEd recently issued Department Order No. 40, which provides guidelines for the conduct of random drug testing in public and private secondary schools for the school year 2017-2018 and thereafter.
The conduct of the drug test shall be based on the parameters provided under Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, and its implementing rules and regulations.
Likewise, the test will be guided by the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) Regulation No. 6, series of 2003, as amended by DDB Regulation No. 3, series of 2009, the DepEd order said.
According to Aposin, the random drug test will be conducted in partnership with the Department of Health.
This initiative aims to help and guide high school students away from prohibited and dangerous drugs, he explained.
“Should there be students who will [test] positive for illegal drug use, they will be referred to proper authorities for counseling or rehabilitation,” he said.
Under DepEd-Capiz were 12 private and 56 public secondary schools, including two integrated schools. (PIA/PN)
