BACOLOD City – The full implementation of the smoking ban started yesterday.
Bacolod Anti-Smoking Task Force (BASTF) vice chairman Caesar Distrito and Secretary to the Mayor Edward Cuansing conducted a briefing among members of the six action teams at the Bacolod City Government Center in the morning before they were deployed to start the apprehensions.
Apprehension procedures, issuance of citation tickets, filing of cases, designated smoking areas, and penalties were explained during the briefing.
Distrito said the citation tickets, prepared by the City Treasurer’s Office, were ready last week.
The BASTF had not been able to conduct apprehensions due to the lack of citation tickets.
The task force has apprehended 10 violators as of this writing.
Meanwhile, the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office already arrested 34 smoking ban violators on board public utility vehicles: 23 were passengers and 11 were drivers.
City Ordinance No. 641, approved on April 2013, regulates smoking in public places and conveyances, and the advertisement, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products.
Under the ordinance, violators shall be fined P500 for the first offense, P1,000 for the second offense, and P2,500 for the third offense and/or imprisonment at the court’s discretion./PN
