ILOILO – An estimated 3,700 barangay officials in the 1st District will take oath as members of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) of President Rodrigo Duterte tomorrow.
The mass oath-taking will be held at the covered gymnasium of Guimbal, Iloilo.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, PDP-Laban secretary, will reportedly swear in the new members.
Prior the oath-taking, the barangay officials will undergo a half-day “basic membership seminar / training.
The 1st District is the acknowledged political bailiwick of PDP-Laban member Cong. Richard Garin who is a potential candidate for Iloilo governor in the 2019 mid-term elections.
Tomorrow’s event is seen as a show of force of Garin.
Recently, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. announced he was joining PDP-Laban, too , and cited “practical politics” in his decision to leave Liberal Party.
The political career of his son, Cong. Arthur “Toto” Defensor Jr. of the 3rd District, was a big factor, the governor said.
“I’d be a hypocrite if I say my decision has nothing to do with politics. I told PDP-Laban my son is interested to become governor. I made the message clear but up to that point lang,” said Defensor.
During a visit to Iloilo City on Aug. 13, Alvarez urged the Defensors to join PDP-Laban.
“If Toto wants to win an election, the administration party can greatly help him. That is practical politics. That is the reality of politics. We don’t have the money to buy votes,” explained the candid Defensor.
The governor, now in his third term, is barred by law from seeking a fourth consecutive term.
Alvarez was in Iloilo City recently and led the mass oath-taking of about 4,000 new party members from Iloilo City such as city councilors and barangay officials./PN
