MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas center Christian Standhardinger leads the group of talented Filipino-foreigners who will join the 2017 PBA Rookie Draft on Oct. 29.
The Filipino-German formalized his participation by submitting his application to PBA commissioner Andres Narvasa on Sept. 4, the deadline for half-foreigners.
But Standhardinger will not be available for the team that will draft him in the first two conferences of next season – he already signed a six-month contract with Hong Kong Long Lions in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
Standhardinger rose to fame among Filipino fans after his impressive performances in the national team in the William Jones Cup, FIBA Asia Cup and Southeast Asian Games.
Filipino-Americans Jason Perkins and Davon Potts and Filipino-Swede Andreas Cahilig – all from the two-time PBA D-League champion Cignal HD Hawkeyes – also entered their name in the 2017 Rookie Draft.
Completing the pool of Filipino-foreigner aspirants were Filipino-Americans Robbie Herndon and Julian Sargent, Filipino-Israeli Felix Apreku and Filipino-Canadian Zachary Nichols, who have also suited up for D-League.
Bobby Ray Parks Jr., former two-time UAAP MVP, again declined joining the Rookie Draft. He intends to focus on Alab Pilipinas squad in ABL.
The deadline for local prospects in the Rookie Draft is Oct. 12. Some of those expected to join were Jeron Teng, Kiefer Ravena, Rey Nambatac, Thomas Torres, and Jaymart Perez./PN
