MANILA – Powerhouse Bangkok Glass defeated the Philippine Superliga Selection team 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-15 at the start of the 2017 Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup Volleyball Tournament in Sisaket, Thailand.
Even without national team star Pleumjit Thinkaow on Monday night, Bangkok Glass was too much for Superliga.
Mika Reyes, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Aby Maraño led the offense for PSL to keep the match close in the opening set but Bangkok Glass capitalized on its opponents miscues late in the set for a 1-0 lead.
Superliga started strong in the second set with hits from Reyes and Frances Molina but the advantage was easily erased by Bangkok Glass behind Jarasporn Bundasak and Pornpun Guepard for a 2-0 set edge.
PSL put up a fight when it prevented a straight-set loss. Reyes, Pontillas and Maraño tag-teamed to cut the set deficit 1-2.
Bangkok Glass quickly shut down Superliga’s momentum in the fourth set, jumping to a huge advantage before widening the gap further to double-digits en route to an opening-day win.
Superliga hopes to bounce back when it faces Rangsit University on Wednesday evening.
Despite their loss, head coach Shaq Delos Santos saw a lot of positives in the Filipinas’ performance.
Delos Santos liked what he saw in their four-set meltdown against the Thais, who paraded a Croatian opposite in Sona Mikyskova for additional firepower.
Their only problem was lack of foreign exposure, said the head coach of the reigning PSL All-Filipino Conference champion Petron.
“We can see that the team tried its very best to compete against the Thais,” Delos Santos said. “Unfortunately, our lack of enough foreign exposure killed our chances. Bumitaw sila sa dulo.” (With Volleyverse.com/PN)
