BACOLOD City – Seventeen persons were apprehended on the first day of the full implementation of the smoking ban in the city.
The Bacolod Anti-Smoking Task Force (BASTF) started apprehensions on Monday.
Before being deployed, the members of the six action teams were briefed by BASTF chairman Edward Joseph Cuansing and vice chairman Caesar Distrito at the Bacolod City Government Center.
The action teams had fined violators caught in areas near the Central Market, Plaza Mart, and a private school on Rizal Street.
Many of the violators were students, according to Distrito.
“Stop smoking and concentrate in your studies,” Distrito said.
The task force had not been able to apprehend violators pending citation tickets that were available only last week.
From July 25 to Aug. 31, the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, led by Senior Superintednent Luisito Acebuche, caught 34 violators smoking on board public utility vehicles.
Under the Comprehensive Bacolod City Anti-Smoking Ordinance, violators will be fined P500 for the first offense, P1,000 for the second offense and P2,500 for the third offense and/or a 30-day imprisonment at the court’s discretion./PN
