MANILA – The House of Representatives is set to hear next week the impeachment complaints against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and Commission on Elections chairman Andres Bautista.
House Committee of Justice chair Reynaldo Umali said they will determine on Wednesday whether the complaints against Sereno and Bautista were sufficient in form and substance.
“As I’ve previously announced, a week after we’ll start hearing, and since the impeachment complaints against Sereno and Bautista were both read in the plenary, we will schedule it simultaneously but one at a time,” said Umali.
He added that the consolidation of the two impeachment complaint against Sereno, which was filed by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption and by lawyer Lorenzo Gadon, will be done if it is sufficient in form and substance.
“’Yung consolidation is not something like meron kaming operative act na pagsamahin namin,” Umali said. “Ijo-join namin ‘yung issues if na-determine na may sufficiency in form and substance.”
The impeachment complaints against Sereno and Bautista were referred to House Justice committee on Thursday, two days after the complaints were transmitted by the Office of the Speaker to the Committee of Rules.
“We at the justice committee are only given 60 session days to initiate the impeachment complaints against impeachable officials,” said Umali./PN
