MANILA – On his fifth visit to Marawi City since fighting between the military and Maute terror group broke out on May 23, President Rodrigo Duterte said he would lift martial law in Mindanao “when it is safe.”
Duterte placed the entire Mindanao under military rule on the same day the Maute group attacked Marawi.
“The catch word is ‘when it’s safe here in Mindanao.’ There is no pulling of a… spillage of men. As long as it remains manageable and the police can take care of it,” the President said on Thursday night.
“I have to clean the place and watch out if there is a spill-over or any sympathy group would initiate trouble again,” he added.
Duterte also said the reconstruction of war-torn Marawi City will begin “immediately.”
“When it is safe for people in government… to go around unmolested,” the former Davao City mayor said.
The President also assured Filipinos the war against the local terrorists will end in “a matter of days.”
“I came here… despite the inclement weather. I must see you because I have to tell you that I love my soldiers. You are precious – your lives are precious to me. Kindly fight na huwag sanang madisgrasya at you will have a thanksgiving somewhere else. We’ll start it with a mass tapos quietly, I will join you in the celebration with your families. It’s just a matter of days. So konting ano na lang,” Duterte concluded.
On Wednesday, Duterte wished the Muslim Filipino community and all Muslims in the world a happy Islamic New Year as he joined them in prayer for worldwide peace.
In his message, Duterte noted that Amun Jadid, or Islamic New Year celebrated in the Philippines on Sept. 21, is one of the most important events in the culture of Islam.
Amun Jadid provides Muslims a reason to celebrate faith, offers the opportunity to contemplate life’s real purpose and grants the chance to reassess their dealings with other people.
“More importantly, it is a time to strengthen your love for Allah by translating the readings of the Holy Qur’an into actions that demonstrate goodwill, obedience, harmony, vitality, and hope,” the President said.
“On this day, I pray with you that we may find all the peace that we seek in ourselves, in our country and in all of humanity,” Duterte said.
He said that while the Filipino people have faced many challenges that tested the respective beliefs, principles, and ways of life of the various cultures in our society, the occasion provides an opportunity to start anew and inspire common endeavors with trust, understanding and mutual respect.
“Let us work as one nation to fight the ills of society and never waver on our journey towards the fulfillment of our promise of real change. I wish you a happy new year and may Allah bless you always,” Duterte said. (With a report from PNA/PN)
