ROXAS City – Construction company owners, engineers and employees from all over the country are attending an occupational health and safety training in the city.

The activity, organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), started on Sept. 25 and will end on Sept. 29.

The training aims to teach participants ways on how to make their workplaces safe. It also identified the leading causes of accidents in construction sites.

Construction continues to be a major cause of death and disabilities among workers, according to the DOLE.

Every 15 seconds, a worker dies from a work-related accident or disease, said the International Labor Organization (ILO).

According to an ILO report, there is an average of 160 million work-related diseases recorded every year.

The report further showed that 2 million die due to these diseases while about 300,000 die in work-related accidents.

Work accidents also kill about 22,000 children, said Engineer Wesly Wilfredo Dulla, one of the event’s resource speakers.

Of these numbers, at least 60,000 fatalities happen in construction sites around the world every ear, Dulla added./PN
