BACOLOD City – Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol will meet with two sugar groups in Negros Occidental tomorrow.
Piñol will sit with the leaders of the National Federation of Sugarcane Workers (NFSW) and the Buklurang Magbubukid sa Pilipinas in Negros at the session hall of the Bacolod City Government Center.
NSFW secretary-general Roque Rillo said they will have a dialogue on the issues in the sugar industry, especially the concerns of workers.
“We will not meet Piñol with protest. [We will] find solutions for the current predicament of sugarcane workers,” said Rillo.
Rillo added they will also ask Piñol updates on the delivery of support services, like seedlings and farm inputs, which the Department of Agriculture promised to give during a dialogue a few months back.
Clarifications regarding the specific allocation of the Sugar Industry Development Act (SIDA) fund will also be tackled, Rillo said.
The role of the Sugar Regulatory Administration in protecting small-time planters must also be laid down, especially that it controls the SIDA fund, stressed Rillo.
Piñol will be in the province today until tomorrow. He will meet with other sugar industry dependents during his stay./PN
