A GIRLS’ TEAM from Bacolod City and a boys’ team from Pototan, Iloilo are set to represent Western Visayas in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) 3X3 U1-5 national finals in Manila next month.
Kiara Mejica from St. Scholastica’s Academy, Lynette Desendario of Brookside Garden Academy-Bago City, and Charity Gecana and Lysa Quaitchon of Bacolod City National High School compose the girls’ team.
The Gerome Aledron-mentored squad earned the nationals berth after defeating Iloilo City National High School during the regional qualifier held recently at the Guimaras provincial capitol gym in Jordan town.
“This tournament shows that basketball isn’t only for boys,” Aledron said. “We have lots of potential female talents in the province who need exposure. And we hope to win in the national finals so we can further promote the sport in Bacolod and the province [of Negros Occidental].”
Pototan National High School in Iloilo province, on the other hand, will play for Western Visayas after defeating Hua Siong College of Iloilo in the regionals.
Both teams from Region 6 will face top teams from National Capital Region, Luzon and Mindanao in the nationals.
Forty teams in the boys’ division and 16 in the girls’ division competed in the regional tournament spearheaded by SBP regional director Robert Uy./PN
