MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings and Meralco Bolts will begin their finals rematch in Game 1 of the PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-seven finals tonight at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.
Game time is 7 o’clock. Kings aims to defend its title while Bolts hopes to recover from its heartbreaking defeat in the finals last year.
Kings entered the finals stage after defeating TNT KaTropa in the semifinals while Bolts made a return trip after sweeping the injury-plagued Star Hotshots.
Bolts prepared hard for its anticipated rematch with Kings by bolstering its roster, with the addition of 3-point gunners Ranidel de Ocampo, Garvo Lanete and rookie Chris Michael Tolomia.
It also retained its veteran-laden lineup led by Baser Amer, Clifford Hodge, Chris Newsome, Jared Dillinger, and Reynel Hugnatan, and brought back import Allen Durham.
“Since we know that (Durham) will comeback, we added floor spacers,” said Bolts head coach Norman Black. “Our biggest improvement now is we can shoot the 3, which was not there last year.”
Kings, on the other hand, further heightened its ceiling with the return of 7-foot-0 center Greg Slaughter from injury and the addition of rookie 3-point gunner Kevin Ferrer.
Also still with Kings in its title-retention bid are LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar, Earl Scottie Thompson, Joe Devance, Solomon Mercado, Mark Caguioa, and reinforcement Justin Brownlee.
“Greg (Slaughter) is a great addition to the team. He changes the way teams approach us. They have to find matchups for him,” said Kings head coach Tim Cone. “That’s the problem Slaughter poses for other teams.”/PN
