MANILA – The Philippine capital is one of the world’s best megacities for women, according to the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Manila ranked sixth among 19 megacities well regarded for protection against sexual violence, access to health care, and access to cultural practices and economic opportunities, a survey the foundation conducted showed.
It was third best in terms of women’s access to economic resources, including education and land and financial services.
“Good news” was how Malacañang described the result of the survey.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said on Wednesday it reflects the government’s resolve in advancing women empowerment.
“Indeed, this assures the public that the Duterte administration is serious in upholding the welfare of Filipino women,” said Abella.
President Rodrigo Duterte directed the full implementation of the Magna Carta of Women, which “recognizes, protects, fulfills, and promotes the rights of Filipino women, especially those in marginalized sector, including reproductive health services, broad anti-violence against women campaign, access to education and employment, among others,” he added.
Thomson Reuters Foundation conducted the survey between June 1 and July 28 and released the result on Oct. 10./PN
