MANILA – Meralco Bolts turned to Allen Durham and Reynel Hugnatan in the endgame to score 94-81 over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings in Game 3 of the PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-seven finals last night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
When the scores tied 77-all, Bolts went on a huge 9-0 run, with Durham perfecting inside hits and Hugnatan connecting outside shots, to build an 86-77 advantage.
Kings had its last run to come to within 80-86 on an outside shot by LA Tenorio. Back-to-back triples by Jared Dillinger and Hugnatan increased Bolts’ lead to its largest 94-81.
Durham led the way with double-double 38 points and 20 rebounds while Bacolodnon Hugnatan added 22 markers, including seven triples, for Bolts, which trimmed the finals deficit to 1-2.
Despite this, Meralco is facing a huge problem heading into Game 4 – Ranidel de Ocampo sustained a left calf tear and could be out for the rest of the series.
“We just have to make do with what we have,” said Bolts head coach Norman Black. “We are fortunate that Reynel got his shooting touch tonight. We will see what adjustments will be made heading into Game 4.”
Kings had a strong start in the match and led by as much as 37-30 but Bolts responded with its own rally behind Hugnatan, Ilonggo Anjo Caram and Durham to come to within 46-47 at the half.
The game got tight in the second half. Both teams exchanged leads until Kings notched the advantage for the last time 72-66, and then Bolts tied things up at 77-all courtesy of inside hits by Durham.
Justin Brownlee top-scored with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar had 14 markers each and Greg Slaughter had 12 points for the defending champion Kings./PN
