MANILA – Residents of Marawi City who plan to rebuild their homes may avail themselves of government loans, according to Sen. Loren Legarda.
President Rodrigo Duterte declared Marawi “liberated from terrorist influence” but the military said operations will continue until there are no more extremist in the capital of Lanao del Sur.
The government will allocate P500 million for locals who wish to borrow money for repairs, said Legarda, chairwoman of the Senate finance committee.
The loan will be free of interest but shall not exceed P2 million per household, the senator said, citing a special provision in the 2018 General Appropriations Bill.
A total of P5 billion in the 2018 national budget was allocated for recovery and rehabilitation efforts in Marawi.
The Senate also set aside P10 billion from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management fund for the same purpose.
In addition, P50 million from the restored P1-billion budget of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Shared Service Facilities Project will be allocated for micro, small and medium enterprises affected by the conflict.
“I encourage all agencies to extend the maximum assistance this government can provide in the most urgent manner as possible,” Legarda said.
Also, P5 million will be used to undertake cultural mapping to “preserve the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the city,” she added.
Meanwhile, senators Sherwin Gatchalian and Paolo Benigno Aquino IV lauded the Armed Forces for neutralizing terrorists Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute.
“Their heroism in the face of immeasurable hardship has immortalized their legacy in the hearts and minds of a grateful nation, which will be forever in their debt,” Gatchalian said.
State forces deserve the utmost praise and gratitude for risking their lives to protect the Filipinos, Aquino said.
“We also commend the members of our local government units, government agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector who took in evacuees and provided support to families who lost their homes and livelihood,” he said./PN
