CERES Negros failed to hang on to its early lead and settled with a 2-2 draw with JP Voltes Marikina in the Philippines Football League at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Fernando Rodriguez scored back-to-back goals for Ceres at the half but JP Voltes countered in the second half courtesy of Takumi Uesato and Takashi Odawara to force the deadlock on Wednesday night.
After the game, the Negros Occidental-based squad got stuck on third place with 39 points on 12 wins, three draws and three losses while JP Voltes is fifth with 28 points on eight wins, four draws and 10 losses.
Ceres was handicapped heading into the match. Head coach Risto Vidakovic was serving a suspension while veterans Stephan Schrock and Jeffrey Christiaens were injured.
Rodriguez connected on a penalty from the bottom right side, allowing Ceres to gain an early lead. He doubled the score with a long-range hit in the 42nd minute.
After a few misses at the start of the second half, JP Voltes drew first blood, with Uesato scoring from the box in the 71st minute before Odawara drained the equalizer in the 82nd via penalty kick.
“We’re really hoping for the 3 points but Marikina was really a good team,” said Ceres Negros team manager James Dinsay. “JP Voltes was a pretty strong team. In fact, they defeated us the last time.”
Ceres hopes to recover from the deadlock when it heads to the Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna province for a face-off with Stallion Laguna on Saturday night./PN
