MANILA – The House of Representatives appropriations committee promised to approve the draft resolution seeking salary increase among military and police personnel once sessions resume in November.

Malacañang has endorsed to both houses of Congress the resolution, prepared by the Department of Budget and Management, doubling the current pay of soldiers and police officers.

“The House of Representatives led by Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has been keeping a close eye on the resolution for the salary hike,” said Rep. Karlo Nograles, committee chairman, “and we guarantee to make President [Rodrigo] Duterte’s promise a reality.”

Duterte had said the salary raise will be given out starting January next year.

Government troops deserve the pay increase, especially after neutralizing terrorist leaders Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute and at least 800 Islamic State-inspired fighters, said Nograles.

The congressman from Davao had assured that funding for the salary hike is available under the proposed P3.767-trillion 2018 budget.

Around P30 billion will be sourced from the Miscellaneous Personnel Benefits Fund for this purpose, he said.

This is apart from the P61.4 billion allocated for the third tranche of salary increases among government workers under the Salary Standardization Law, said Nograles./PN
