KALIBO, Aklan – Through songs and posters, locals called for marine life conservation during song-writing and poster-making contests in Mabilo, Aklan.

The contests – organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – were held on Oct. 19, as part of the Fish Conservation Week celebration from Oct. 16 to 20, at the Community Fish Landing Center.

Eight contestants participated in the song-writing contest while 11 in the poster-making.

Their works revolved around the theme of the event, which is “Industriya ng Pangisdaan ay Masigla kung ang Karagatan ay Malinis at Masagana.”

Locals residing near coastal areas joined the song-writing completion while students from Aklan State University (ASU) participated in the poster-making.

For the song-writing contest, Danilo Magno of Barangay Baybay, Makato, Aklan got the first place.

Pancho Tomilloso of Barangay Cawayan, New Washington, Aklan and Rodrigo Ragos of Barangay Aslum, Ibajay, Aklan placed second and third, respectively.

For the poster-making contest, Ariel Castillo landed in first place, followed by Leslie Bogoy (second) and Alex Masula (third).

The winners for both contests received cash prizes: P5,000 for first placers, P3,000 for second placers and P2,000 for third.

Consolation prizes of P1,000 were also given to non-winning participants.

Provincial Fisheries officer-in-charge May Guanco said the winners will represent Aklan in the regional level, competing with representatives from Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental. (PIA/PN)
