ILOILO City – Bazaars at public plazas are allowed but ukay-ukay kiosks are not, clarified Acting Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
He issued the clarification following Sunday’s murder of a trader selling ready-to-wear (RTWs) clothes at the plaza of Mandurriao district.
The murder, however, is making Espinosa think if he would ban plaza bazaars, too.
“Tan-awon ta anay…ano gid ang rason. Kay gapangabuhi man da ang iban. Crimes and criminals are everywhere,” he said.
Espinosa advised plaza bazaar operators not to keep huge amounts of money in their kiosks so as not to attract criminals.
An RTW Muslim trader, his wife and five-month-old son were repeatedly hit with a hammer inside their kiosk at Mandurriao plaza on Sunday.
The 29-year-old Muamar Ditingki and son Mohamed died of severe head injuries.
Ditingki’s wife Asnifah, 21, is still at the Western Visayas Medical Center fighting for survival.
A suspect had been arrested.
Espinosa ordered the Iloilo City Police Office to enhance police presence at Mandurriao plaza.
“Such kind of incident should not happen again,” he said.
Early this month, Espinosa announced that public plazas were off-limits to ukay-ukay as a “general rule.”
In banning ukay-ukay stalls plazas, Espinosa cited Republic Act 4653 (An Act to Safeguard the Health of the People and Maintain the Dignity of the Nation by Declaring it a National Policy to Prohibit the Commercial Importation of Textile Articles Commonly known as Used Clothing and Rags)./PN
