MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers survived a tough stand by Generika-Ayala Life Savers for a 25-16, 25-21, 25-27, 25-21 win in the 2017 Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the San Juan Arena.
After handily winning the first two sets on Thursday night, the HD Spikers encountered trouble in the third frame and nearly had the same trouble in the fourth after seeing its 18-10 lead trimmed down to 22-21.
However, the HD Spikers managed to salvage the meltdown with conversions from Rachel Anne Daquis, Australian import Beth Carey and Ilongga Jovelyn Gonzaga to close the set.
American import Alexis Mathews finished with 19 points, including five blocks, for the HD Spikers while Gonzaga and Carey added 17 and 16 points, respectively, for HD Spikers, which improved to 1-1 win-loss card.
“Hindi pa (perfect) kasi dapat ang team chemistry (nandoon na),” rued HD Spikers head coach George Pascua. “Madami pa kaming kailangan ayusin and hopefully magawa namin ‘yan.”
Croatian import Katarina Pilepic topscored with 25 points, while Darlene Ramdin added 23 markers for Life Savers, which has suffered its second defeat in three matches so far.
Meanwhile, All-Filipino Conference champions Petron Blaze Spikers cruised to its second straight victory following a 27-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14 domination over Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors.
American Lindsay Stalzer led the way with 29 points, including 28 attacks, while Hillary Hurley added 27 markers, on 25 attacks, a block and a service ace, for the Blaze Spikers./PN
