MANILA – San Sebastian College Stags stayed alive in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball step-ladder semifinals with an 85-73 victory over Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers last night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Regille Ilagan led the way with 21 points, including five three-point conversions. Michael Calisaan and Ailyn Bulanadi had 13 points apiece, while Jayson David contributed 10 markers for the Stags.

The victory allowed the Stags to move on to the next phase of the step-ladder semifinals. It will face defending champion San Beda Red Lions on Nov. 7 in a knockout game.

Trailing early in the second quarter, the Stags went on an early run to snatch the lead at 19-18 on Calisaan basket.

The Stags widened the lead further at the half following three straight triples from Ilagan.

The Heavy Bombers rallied back early in the third to come to within 41-43 but the Stags pulled away anew courtesy of inside conversions by Calisaan for a 71-45 advantage on  a triple by Alfren Gayosa.

The Heavy Bombers made a huge push in the final quarter as it trimmed the deficit to 72-82 following a triple by Jed Mendoza, but a free throw by Ryan Costelo and an inside hit by Calisaan sealed the win for the Stags.

“Jose Rizal is an experienced team and always a tough team to play because of their rugged defense so ‘yun talaga ang pinaghandaan namin,” said Stags head coach Edgar Macaraya.

Mendoza finished with 20 points. Bernabe Teodoro added 12 markers while Mark Dela Virgen and Ervin Grospe each had 11 markers for the Heavy Bombers./PN
