ILOILO – Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol led the groundbreaking of the P6-million solar power irrigation system in Dingle town yesterday.
Piñol met with farmers from the town for a dialogue prior to the groundbreaking of the irrigation project in Barangay Tabugon.
The project is expected to cover a minimum of 10 hectares out of the 50-hectare production area of the barangay.
At present, 13 hectares of the total production area are irrigated while 37 hectares are identified as potential irrigable production area.
Piñol has been pushing for the solar-powered pump, which is “easy to operate and maintain,” according to the Department of Agriculture’s regional agri-fishery information section.
The solar-powered pump can continuously operate for five to 10 hours daily. It is also suitable for use in remote watershed and rain-fed areas.
A model of the said facility was showcased during last month’s Makina Saka Expo in Barangay Hamungaya, Jaro.
Next year, nine solar-powered irrigation systems will be installed in the region. PNA)
