MANILA – San Miguel Beermen further boosted its powerhouse lineup by picking Christian Standhardinger as No. 1 pick in the PBA Draft yesterday in Ermita.
The 6-foot-8 Filipino-German as a top pick was not a surprise after his impressive stints with Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Cup and the Southeast Asian Games this year.
But the 28-year-old will have to fulfill his commitment with Hong Kong in the ASEAN Basketball League before suiting up for Beermen, where he was expected to team up with 6-foot-10 June Mar Fajardo.
“I am grateful that I can play in the PBA. I am also happy to be drafted by San Miguel,” said Standhardinger. “I know that San Miguel is already a strong lineup but I am willing to contribute in any way to help them win championships.”
Two Western Visayan players were selected at No. 2 and No. 3 – Ilonggo Kiefer Ravena, who went to NLEX Road Warriors, and Negrense Raymar Jose, who headed to Blackwater Elite, respectively.
Jeron Teng – who was touted to be selected in No. 3 – fell all the way to No. 5 with Alaska Aces. Phoenix Fuel Masters, on the other hand, picked Filipino-American Jason Perkins at No. 4.
GlobalPort Batang Pier selected Robbie Herndon at No. 6 while Rain or Shine Elasto Painters picked Rey Nambatac at No. 7. Filipino-Nigerian Sidney Onwubere was drafted by Fuel Masters at No. 8.
Rounding out the drafted players in the first round were Lervin Flores, Star Hotshots, No. 9; Mark Tallo and Jon-Jon Gabriel, TNT KaTropa, No. 10 and No. 11, respectively; and Anton Manuel, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, No. 12.
Chosen in the second round were John Grospe (Road Warriors), Joseph Gabayni (Hotshots), Emil Palma (Elite), Julian Sargent (Hotshots), Louie Vigil (Beermen), Davon Potts (Aces), Jomari Sollano (Painters), Gwynne Capacio (Hotshots), Jason Grimaldo (Fuel Masters), Monbert Arong (KaTropa), Wilson Baltazar (Fuel Masters), and Aklanon Andreas Cahilig (Batang Pier)./PN
