MANILA – Other witnesses to the death of University of Santo Tomas law student Horacio “Atio” Castillo III were urged to come out in the open.
The Senate public order committee will resume on Nov. 6 its investigation into Castillo’s death, allegedly due to hazing.
The panel will discuss the six-page affidavit filed by Aegis Juris member Mark Anthony Ventura recounting the details that led to Castillo’s death.
“We want to reiterate our call because welcome development ang ating narinig mula kay Mr. Ventura,” said Sen. Joel Villanueva, committee member.
“I’m sure na Mr. Ventura ay ipinapako ngayon sa krus ng kanyang mga supposedly brods o fraternity brothers,” Villanueva said. “Ang call namin ngayon ay lumabas na din po ang iba at magsabi na din ng katotohanan sapagkat ang katotohanan lamang ang magpapalaya po sa inyo.”
Ventura’s affidavit submitted to the witness protection program of the Justice department was a “big revelation” and could help end the deadly tradition of hazing in schools, the senator said.
Villanueva also called on members of the Aegis Jvris fraternity to “step up” to immediately resolve the case.
“Magsalita na din po nang sa gayon ay tuluyan nang lumabas ang katotohanan at tayo, hindi dapat tayo matakot doon sa accountability natin. Kung sino man ang dapat managot ay dapat managot,” he said.
Meanwhile, the senators were “disappointed” with hazing suspect John Paul Solano, who earlier agreed to tell all and give the names of those involved.
“After niya makausap iyong mga brods niya nag-backtrack na siya, bumaligtad na siya. We’re so disappointed,” Villanueva said.
“Itong darating na hearing, mas magiging intense dahil hindi na nila basta-basta magagamit ang invocation ng kanilang right against self-incrimination,” he said./PN
