ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) is holding a special session today. City councilors will discuss the memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the city government and the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc. (IDFI) for the staging of Dinagyang Festival 2018 in January.
Mayor Jose Espinosa III called for the special session. He is seeking authority from the SP to sign the MOA.
“Hopefully, maaprobahan na because time is running out. We also want our partners to have enough time to prepare,” Espinosa told reporters.
January next year is the 50th anniversary of Dinagyang Festival. The city government held a grand anniversary launching this September.
The SP has some concerns it wants the IDFI to address. One of these is how the foundation spends and accounts its Dinagyang resources.
Dinagyang is Iloilo City’s version of the Ati-atihan celebrations widely observed not only in Panay Island but also in other parts of the country.
It may not be as ancient as the one in Kalibo, Aklan but it is known more for the participants’ impressive choreography and striking costumes that reflect the ingenuity, craftsmanship and artistry of the Ilonggos.
Highlights of the festivity are on Jan. 26, 27 and 28, 2018.
The city government is allotting P18 million for the 2018 edition of the festival. The fund will be released to the IDFI that has been tasked to organize the festivity./PN
