MANILA – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has tightened the country’s security for the possible entry of terrorists out to disrupt the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Meetings from Nov. 13 to 15.
Immigration commissioner Jaime Morente ordered additional security men at the country’s airports and seaports.
“Terrorists might use the high volume of inbound and outbound travelers and the confusion that comes with large crowds to slip into the country and disrupt ASEAN activities,” said Morente.
To avoid this, he instructed all international airports and seaports nationwide to be doubly strict in screening travelers.
“Our officers were told to refer for secondary inspection doubtful foreigners,” said Morente.
The BI is also coordinating with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies of the government and their counterparts abroad.
“It is imperative that our men at the ports exercise extra vigilance in monitoring and screening all arriving foreign passengers so that those intending to disrupt the summit are not able to sneak into our country,” said Morente.
Aside from airports and seaports, immigration personnel will also be assigned to border crossing stations in Mindanao and Palawan in coordination with the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard.
