BACOLOD City – Councilor Em Ang acknowledged the Filipino-Indian community in the city for its contribution to Bacolod’s economy.
Ang, who is the chairwoman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on tourism, officially opened the 5th Diwali Festival yesterday at the SMX Convention Center at SM City Bacolod.
The festival will run until Nov. 12.
“They have contributed so much (to the city). Another good thing is while they contribute to the economy, they have also been giving back to the community,” Ang said.
Ang cited the Filipino-Indian community’s efforts in conducting regular medical missions and other community outreach programs for the “disadvantaged sector” in the city.
She said these activities “help the local government and the community.”
Moreover, Ang said the Diwali Festival is like the Bacolaodiat, a festival of the Filipino-Chinese community in the city.
She added that eventhough the Filipino-Indian community in the city is not as big as its Filipino-Chinese counterpart, Diwali Festival is still gaining a lot of support.
“Maybe our Filipino-Indian community is one-tenth of the Filipino-Chinese community in this capital city. But we are one of the few cities in the Philippines that celebrates Diwali Festival,” said Ang.
Ang hopes that the festival will draw more visitors in the city, thus boosting the tourism industry.
Diwali Festival is organized by the community group Punjabi Khalsa Diwan, with the theme “Unity in Diversity.”
