MANILA – Filipino MMA star Eduard Folayang will defend his world lightweight belt against featherweight champ Martin Nguyen at the main event of “ONE FC: Legends of the World” tonight at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Folayang (18-5 win-loss) will guard for the second time the title he won against Japanese legend Shinya Aoki in November last year.
“My biggest advantage against Martin is my experience because I have been fighting for a long time,” said the Benguet native. “But I have complete respect for my opponent’s skills so I’m preparing to showcase my best version.”
“I’ve fought many times here in the Philippines and there’s really nothing like it in front of your kababayan,” he added. “This is a bout for the fans, and I can’t wait to perform in front of my hometown crowd in Manila once again.”
A victory by Folayang will further catapult him as the king of the lightweight class and extend his winning streak to four.
But Nguyen (9-1) will not be a pushover. He will head to the match with five-game win streak, including the second-round stoppage victory over Marat Gafurov in August.
“I have the utmost respect for Folayang and will definitely not take his skills for granted,” Nguyen said. “But this is going to be a dog fight. It’s the first time two champions in different divisions go head-to-head in ONE.”
“Moving up to a higher weight class is not a plan. Win or lose against Eduard, I will return to featherweight division,” added the Australia-based fighter. “I just want to fight my good friend Folayang.”/PN
