MANILA – Meralco Manila FC leaned on Gerardo Valmayor’s game-winner to escape with a 1-0 win over Kaya-Makati FC in the 2017 Philippines Football League the other night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium here.
With both teams still scoreless at the 82nd minute, the San Carlos City, Negros Occidental native Valmayor surged Meralco Manila ahead with a header from a pass by Daniel Gadia.
With the victory, Meralco Manila remained on top of the standings with 54 points, on 16 wins, six draws and four losses.
Kaya-Makati is at third place with 47 points on 14 wins, five draws and eight losses.
“It was a tough match for both teams but then the players stepped up. We were fortunate to have good substitutions (in Valmayor) in the end,” said Meralco Manila head coach Aris Caslib.
It was a defensive-oriented match and seemed headed to a scoreless draw until Valmayor sneaked one out for the go-ahead goal.
Kaya-Makati had a chance to tie but Jordan Mintah’s shot was deflected by Meralco Manila’s Joaco Cañas.
Over at the Cebu City Sports Complex, Wesley Dos Santos scored the game-winning goal as Global-Cebu FC escaped with a 3-2 victory over upset-conscious Ilocos United FC.
With the score tied at 2-2 following an exchange of goals by Ilocos United’s Arthur Kouassi and Global-Cebu’s Darryl Roberts, Dos Santos surged the Cebuanos ahead with a well-placed shot from a pass by Yu Hoshide in the 78th minute.
With the outcome, Global-Cebu has sealed a slot in the final round with 43 points, on 12 wins, seven draws and six losses. Ilocos United dropped to eighth place with seven points./PN
