MANILA – Injuries due to hazing – not heart attack – killed University of Santo Tomas law student Horacio “Atio” Castillo III, according to the Manila Police District’s (MPD) final medicolegal report.
The report, which was submitted to the Justice department, stated that the 22-year-old freshman died of severe blunt traumatic injuries he sustained during initiation rites for the Aegis Jvris fraternity.
Castillo immediately died of traumatic soft tissue injuries on the arms after he was repeatedly hit with a paddle, the report said.
“The mechanism of death from traumatic soft tissue injuries will cause rhabdomyolysis (skeletal breakdown) resulting to electrolyte imbalance and acute kidney injury,” the medicolegal report stated.
“Increased potassium in the blood and decreased calcium in the blood due to muscle trauma will cause immediate death from cardiac failure,” stated the report signed by Superintendent Joseph Palmero, chief of the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory.
Those accused of conducting the hazing, the MPD said, “seemed to have conveniently forgotten” other provisional anatomical diagnosis – blunt traumatic injuries on the right and left upper extremities – and that the body was still pending histopathological examination.
Earlier John Paul Solano, accused of murder in light of Castillo’s death, claimed based on provisional anatomical diagnosis that the law student died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, a preexisting heart condition.
Suspect-turned-witness Marc Anthony Ventura, meanwhile, said Castillo was continuously hit with a paddle on the arms until he lost consciousness./PN
