VICE MAYOR Jose Espinosa III has now assumed office as city mayor of Iloilo effective Oct. 30, 2017 after serving as acting mayor since Aug. 30, 2017 when Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog left the country for medical leave.
With the order from the Office of the Ombudsman on ousting Mayor Mabilog from office served by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for charges of serious dishonesty related to his alleged unexplained wealth, Espinosa now takes over the remainder of Mabilog’s term up to 2019.
Kagawad Jeffrey Ganzon was sworn in as the new Vice Mayor.
It was a right move for Mayor Joe III to create an evaluation team and fairly review the performance of department heads, executive assistants, as well as all appointed employees whose term is co-terminus with that of the previous Mayor to determine who may be retained to join his team in the new administration.
It will also be timely to review the city’s annual budget for the remainder of the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018, and ask the Sangguniang Panlungsod for funding of new programs that he might undertake to pursue his mandate.
Asking our barangay tanods to help in the city government’s campaign to curb criminality in the neighborhood is one good program that he plans to implement.
Malacanang’s positive reaction on Mayor Espinosa’s assumption of office is a good development for our city. Through Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, he was recognized as one who is “qualified, fit and without baggage.”
Changing of the guard on the city’s leadership turned out good for us. Now we can be assured of Iloilo’s continuing growth. (For comments or re-actions, please e-mail to jnoveracompany@yahoo.com)/PN
