MANILA – A native of San Jose, Antique made a triumphant return in the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open tennis tournament.
Marian Jade Capadocia defeated Alyssa Bornia 6-1, 6-1 in a first-round match in Paco, Manila.
In her first appearance in the tournament after four years, Capadocia faced token resistance from Bornia on Monday and moved on to the second round.
Capadocia – a four-time PCA Open champion – will face Khryshana Brazal in the second round. Brazal easily beat Nicole Amistad in the first round.
“It’s good to be back here after missing the last two years of the competition. I’ve been competing in different ITF tournaments. Hopefully magamit ko dito iyong experience ko,” said Capadocia.
The 22-year-old ruled the PCA Open ladies’ singles for four straight years since 2011 until she decided to focus on international competitions in Netherlands, Belgium, Egypt, France, China, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Germany.
In men’s action, reigning champion Patrick John Tierro and No. 1 Jeson Patrombon handily defeated their second-round foes to advance to the next round.
The 32-year-old Tierro eliminated Kyle Parpan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 while Patrombon edged Calvin Canlas 6-2, 6-3./PN
