ILOILO City – Fifteen high school students and two teachers of Pavia National High School fell ill and were hospitalized.
They had difficulty breathing and blamed the thick smoke from the school’s stockroom that fire struck yesterday around 8:15 a.m.
The stockroom contained, among others, tires and construction materials, according to Dolorah Cecilia Fantillo, school principal.
The hospitalized students were members of Grade 9 and Grade 10 classes. Their classrooms were near the stockroom.
Fantillo said the students and two teachers were brought to the Western Visayas Sanitarium in nearby Santa Barbara town “for checkup.”
As of this writing, the Bureau of Fire Protection was yet to conclude its investigation.
It was being theorized that a carelessly thrown cigarette butt may have sparked the fire./PN
