ILOILO City – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) arrested six persons and seized shabu worth P460,000 from a boardinghouse in Barangay Seminario, Jaro district yesterday.
The following were taken to the PDEA Region 6 detention facility in Fort San Pedro: Maribel Hulleza, Julmar Taub, Hernani Tipayan, Reynaldo Cavintoy, Robert Alipat, and Eduardo Pineda.
The buy-bust operation was carried out around 2 p.m. A PDEA agent bought a sachet of shabu for P500 from the suspects, said David Abraham Garcia, spokesperson of the agency’s regional office.
A big elongated plastic sachet and two big square-shaped sachets of shabu weighing 52 grams were recovered. These were valued at P460,000 – the biggest that PDEA-6 seized so far since October.
A .45 pistol was also recovered.
“Hulleza and Taub were tenants of the boardinghouse. They made their space available to drug users,” said Garcia.
The suspects said they were merely drug users, not pushers, said Garcia.
Sources linked Hulleza and Taud to the Prevendido drug group who leader Richard Prevendido was killed in a shootout with policemen in Barangay Balabago, Jaro on Sept. 1.
The arrested suspects face charges of violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Act.
PDEA-6 director Wardley Getalla recently lamented that without the police’s help, the agency was having difficulty catching high-value drug targets.
In a memorandum issued on Oct. 10, President Rodrigo Duterte directed the Philippine National Police, National Bureau of Investigation, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Customs and all other agencies or ad hoc antidrug task forces to stop conducting anti-illegal drug operations and leave the job to PDEA./PN
